Third Act Illinois is building a community of experienced Americans over the age of sixty determined to change the world - and Illinois - for the better. Together we use our life experience, skills, and resources to build a better tomorrow for future generations.

Our focus is climate change action, specifically: disinvestment from fossil fuels, decarbonization, democratization of energy, and preserving and strengthening our democracy. Together with our affiliate – Third Act Downstate – and our allies, we use the people’s tools to rally against dirty banks; gather and deliver petitions; and garner support for both local, state-wide, and federal initiatives to put safe, alternative energy within the reach of all Illinois residents.

Vision

  • To build – for future generations – a sustainable and equitable world, based in a thriving, participatory democracy.

Goals

  • Preserve democracy by supporting candidates that support voting rights, civil rights, and climate justice
  • Build alliances with Illinois-based environmental justice organizations
  • Reach out to other ‘experienced elders’ looking for a way to channel their hope for a sustainable world
  • Engage members in educational and social opportunities, including a Zoom book club.

Some of our Current Activities

  • Preserve democracy by supporting candidates that support voting rights, civil rights, and climate justice
  • Organize for passing Illinois HB 3037, the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act, to remove fossil fuel companies from the state pension portfolio
  • Support community efforts to democratize local energy services: in the Springfield area, and in the City of Chicago by supporting the Chicago Affordable Buildings Ordinance
  • Provide a “navigator” program to help guide Illinois residents through their journey toward a fossil-free home.
