Our working group came together on March 21, 2023 – 3/21/23 – for a National Day of Action against the big banks as prime enablers of fossil-fuel extraction. We marked the day with an overnight vigil, an interfaith rally, a march featuring giant puppets and bucket drummers, and, for an attention-getting finale, a sit-down blockade (or “Rocking Chair Rebellion”) outside downtown Washington branches of the four biggest and dirtiest banks. Galvanized by that experience, we have set out to make more good trouble in the pursuit of environmental sanity and a democracy liberated from the bonds of corporate and Wall Street power.
In addition to our role in Third Act’s national campaigns, we will be working on complementary projects in DC and the surrounding region. The opportunities abound. They include:
- Supporting the equitable rollout of affordable clean energy to our fellow Washingtonians.
- Advancing the cause of DC home rule and statehood.
- Opposing the replacement of gas infrastructure in DC
- Senior to Senior voter registration and protection of voters’ rights.
- Swing-state action to elect more climate and democracy champions to the House and Senate.
- Building grass-roots opposition to the corruption and pro-corporate tilt of the Supreme Court and the federal judiciary.
