Power Up the TVA!

Write to the U.S. Senate EPW Committee: Vet and Approve TVA Board Members Committed to Affordability and Climate Leadership.

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is the largest public power utility in the U.S., providing electricity and flood control to ten million people across seven states.

TVA currently plans to add and expand dirty fossil gas power plants and pipelines, while offering a sad 0.003% solar. TVA’s Board has failed to lead—disregarding how clean power is already saving money and creating energy stability and green jobs in nearby states. Meanwhile, the TVA is paying CEO Jeffrey Lyash the nation’s highest salary for a federal employee. The US EPA rejected TVA’s plans as inadequate, and this fossil buildout would directly sabotage President Biden’s nationwide climate targets.

But there’s good news! There are three vacancies on the TVA Board—including two members appointed by Donald Trump whose terms are expiring on May 18, 2024. The US Senate has the constitutional responsibility to vet TVA Board nominees, and to engage in robust negotiations that enable the President to nominate clean energy champions to these vacancies.

We’re asking you to write to the Senate EPW (Environment and Public Works) Committee Co-Chairs Markey and Carper, and call for them to vet and approve clean energy champions to the TVA– not more rubber-stampers for expensive, obsolete fossil gas.
