Power Up Communities Committee

The Democratizing Energy committee focuses on implementation of the Illinois Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) passed in 2021. Considered the most equitable climate legislation in the country, CEJA will move Illinois to 100% carbon-free power by 2045. To accomplish this goal the state will need to expand energy efficiency and other cost-saving opportunities for consumers; implement the toughest utility ethics standards in state history; expand clean and affordable modes of transportation; and implement equity programs that help bring benefits of the clean energy economy to all communities. CEJA was made possible by the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition (ICJC) of which Third Act IL is an active member, and includes more than 200 climate groups representing constituents across Illinois.

Monthly Meeting:

  • Usually the third Thursday of the month at 9:30 am. On Zoom. Please check the “Events” listing for details.

Current Activities and Initiatives:

  • Public Utility Companies: Fight utility rate hikes that extend reliance on infrastructure projects throughout Illinois and, in Springfield, organize to reshape Springfield’s energy future by ending its reliance on coal-fired generation.
  • Chicago’s Clean and Affordable Buildings Ordinance (CABO) – In Chicago, the single largest source (68%) of all emissions is buildings. Third Act Illinois supports this legislation which, when enacted, will begin the long-term transition off the gas system and towards all-electric buildings. CABO can be a model for other metropolitan areas.
  • Electrification: We are initiating a Navigation Project to assist our members and other seniors, both renters and homeowners, through the often confusing journey toward electrification.

The best way to learn all about the Democratizing Energy Committee and upcoming actions is to attend our monthly meeting.
