Defending Our Democracy https://thirdact.org/colorado/2025/03/03/defending-our-democracy/ Mon, 03 Mar 2025 22:27:52 +0000 https://thirdact.org/colorado/?p=580 With each day bringing new atrocities from Washington, it’s hard to know how to fight back. But whatever we do, we will be more powerful together. Collectively, TACO members can make their voices heard, calling out fascism and protecting our democratic institutions.

TACO will be holding two Zoom meetings to discuss our options and approach– on MARCH 19 at 6PM and MARCH 20 at 1PM. The content of these meetings will be identical; we are holding both an afternoon meeting and an evening meeting to make it easy for people to attend. Watch your email for information about how to register for a meeting.

At the meetings, we will discuss a list of action ideas that will be shared with registered attendees in advance of the meeting. (Actions include but are not limited to writing letters to the editor, contacting elected officials, attending congressional town halls, participating in demonstrations, etc.) Please be prepared to share your ideas as well.  The meetings will result in  a short list of actions that TACO will pursue. You will also have the opportunity to sign up for a small group to work on the action of most interest to you. It will take all of our ideas, hard work, and enthusiasm to make this happen!

URGENT https://thirdact.org/colorado/2024/11/20/urgent/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 14:46:02 +0000 https://thirdact.org/colorado/?p=557
There is an alarming piece of legislation in Congress, H.R. 9495, that would allow the government to designate any nonprofit as a “terrorist supporting organization,” and then require that organization to prove itself innocent to avoid revocation of its tax-exempt status. The House of Representatives is scheduled to consider H.R. 9495 this week, with a vote likely on Wednesday or Thursday. While intended to be anti-terrorism legislation, all nonprofits should be concerned about the dangerous precedent this bill could establish and the potential for abuse by the Executive Branch.
Third Act has co-sponsored an action alert.  They are asking that WG members use this TA-specific link to do so.
If you prefer to call your representative, below is a sample script to use.

Sample script for calling your representative:

I’m calling to urge you to oppose H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act, scheduled for a vote later today. This bill poses a direct threat to nonprofits by granting the Treasury Secretary unchecked power to label organizations as “terrorist supporting” and strip their tax-exempt status. Even worse, this can happen without evidence, intentional links, or any requirement to disclose the reasons for the designation. The lack of due process and accountability leaves nonprofits defenseless against vague and potentially politically motivated accusations.

While the bill includes provisions for tax relief for American hostages—a noble cause—this should not come at the expense of jeopardizing nonprofit operations and democratic values. These provisions should be separated into their own bill that doesn’t include the unchecked harm to nonprofits.

Please oppose H.R. 9495 to protect nonprofits and the communities they serve. Thank you for your time and consideration.”

Let’s go, Third Actors!

Trisha worked in communications for the U.S National Science Foundation and also worked  for the AFL-CIO. She is a strong protector of the working-class and for access to affordable health care for rural communities.

Colorado Volunteers Endorse Caraveo in 8th District https://thirdact.org/colorado/2024/09/10/third-act-co-endorses-caraveo-in-8th-district/ Tue, 10 Sep 2024 19:22:21 +0000 https://thirdact.org/colorado/?p=489

The daughter of working-class Mexican immigrants, Caraveo was raised in Adams County. She worked hard as a student in the Adams 12 Five Star Public School system and then at Regis University, becoming the first in her family to earn a college degree. Caraveo earned her medical degree at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and became a pediatrician after completing her internship and residency at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.

As a doctor serving our community, Caraveo saw firsthand how high costs, slow wage growth, and inaccessible healthcare are pushing the American Dream further out of reach for Colorado families. After a particularly difficult fight with an insurance company, Caraveo was driven to run for elected office so she could advocate for systemic change that would help her patients and community.

Caraveo served in the Colorado legislature, where she took on special interests and worked to lower costs for all Coloradans. Now, as a Member of Congress, Caraveo is focused on continuing that work.

She is working to lower costs for families, improve healthcare access, and ensure every child in Colorado has the opportunities they deserve. Caraveo serves on the House Agriculture Committee, serving as Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commodity Markets, Digital Assets, and Rural Development, and she serves on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

Major EPA grant to Denver Regional Council of Governments https://thirdact.org/colorado/2024/08/22/epa-grant/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 15:24:33 +0000 https://thirdact.org/colorado/?p=460

Denver, CO  – The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) is pleased to announce the award of a major federal grant, amounting to nearly $200 million, aimed at reducing climate pollution and promoting sustainability across the region. The grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will fund an ambitious and comprehensive regional program aimed at transforming the building sector in the Denver area, with focused investment in underserved low-income and disadvantaged communities.

This significant funding will support several coordinated initiatives that will reduce carbon pollution from buildings, foster workforce development and offer financial incentives for home services and electric appliances, such as heat pumps, water

heaters, and electric cooktops and ranges. Each initiative will address specific environmental and industry challenges and improve air quality and public health in a region with elevated levels of air pollutants, like ozone.

Program highlights include:

  • Cutting 148,200,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2050 — the equivalent of taking 35 million gas-powered cars off the road for an entire year.
  • Training 4,800-plus workers for the electrification workforce, including 1,000 upskilled workers.
  • Engaging 1.6 million Coloradans in the benefits of building efficiency and electrification through a public awareness campaign.
  • Receiving $73 million in voluntary matched funding from local governments committed to amplifying impact.

TACO is in communication with DRCOG to partner on implementing this terrific program.  DRCOG is months out from getting started but if you are interested in helping, contact Mike Lotte, text: 303-503-4344 or mlotte1780@gmail.com
