“Too many news organizations stoke hate and spread misinformation for profit. Organizations including Fox News, Newsmax and the Sinclair Broadcast Group — the owner of the largest number of local-TV stations in the United States — all rely on a business model that dehumanizes people, especially communities of color.” (Free Press. https://www.freepress.net)

“News coverage is far more than a benign source of facts. From our attitudes to immigrants to the content of our dreams, it can sneak into our subconscious and meddle with our lives in surprising ways. It can lead us to miscalculate certain risks, shape our views of foreign countries, and possibly influence the health of entire economies.  It can increase our risk of developing post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. There’s emerging evidence that the emotional fallout of news coverage can even affect our physical health – increasing our chances of having a heart attack or developing health problems years later.” BBC

Resource for media ownership, and media involvement in political campaigns: https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/futureofmedia/index-us-mainstream-media-ownership

The Harvard summary on media ownership:

  • Media ownership has a significant influence on news content, raising concerns about bias, lack of diversity, self-censorship, and conflicts of interest.
  • Concentration of media ownership can lead to selective reporting, framing of stories, and the omission of certain perspectives.
  • Lack of diversity in news content limits the range of voices and ideas represented, hindering a robust and inclusive public discourse.
  • Self-censorship and conflicts of interest may arise when media outlets align their content with the interests of owners or advertisers.
  • Economic implications include the closure of smaller independent outlets and monopolistic practices.
  • Regulations promoting media diversity and transparency can help address these concerns.
  • Media consumers should be critical and seek out diverse sources and perspectives.
  • Media organizations must strive for transparency, independence, and accountability.
  • Understanding and addressing the influence of media ownership is crucial for a more informed and democratic society.

Two Actions to Take TODAY

Defend Medicaid From Republican Budget Cuts

Republicans are advancing a budget reconciliation bill that, if finalized, will cut mass amounts from Medicaid and directly harm millions of low income and disabled Americans.
Use 5calls to contact Oregon’s Senators and your representative in Congress to push back on this cruel attempt to cut an essential program in order to pass a tax cut for the rich.

Block a Massive Budget Increase for ICE and Mass Deportations

Six Ways that Individuals Can Take Climate Action https://thirdact.org/oregon/2024/04/10/six-ways-that-individuals-can-take-climate-action/ Thu, 11 Apr 2024 02:07:11 +0000 https://thirdact.org/oregon/?p=599 Six Ways that Individuals Can Take Climate Action (from Lawrence McDonald’s book:  “Am I Too Old to Save the Planet?“)

In his recent book, “Am I Too Old to Save the Planet?” Lawrence McDonald proposes six ways that people can take climate action right now.  These are:*

  1. “Stop wasting food and eat less meat, because that can both save us money and meat is a major source of emissions.
  2. Drive less; walk, bike, take public transport more.
  3. Move your money out of fossil fuel investments:
    1. There are 70 million of us, 70 million boomers, and we do control 70 percent of the country’s wealth. There’s a section in the book that describes one of the easiest things we can do is to move our money, to take it out of the big banks that are insisting on investing in new fossil fuel projects. Put it in a local Wisconsin credit union* instead, or find an investment vehicle that does not invest in fossil fuels. If enough boomers moved our money, we could make a big difference.
  4. Upgrade your car to an EV.
  5. Install rooftop solar or participate in a community solar program.
  6. Fly less or not at all:
    • Aviation is only about 2 or 3 percent of global emissions, but for most of us, getting on an airplane is the highest emitting activity that we will ever do. And only about 10 or 15 percent of the world ever gets on a flight at all. So it’s really a luxury activity. I personally have cut back on my flying.”
[* this text is from a Wisconsin Public Radio interview on 12/22/2023; https://www.wpr.org/books/baby-boomers-climate-change-lawrence-macdonald-activism]

Here are some questions for discussion:

  1.  Is it feasible for you to take one or more of his six actions?
  2. How do we reconcile climate actions we want the fossil fuel industry and corporations to take – with actions that we can take as individuals or families?
  3. How are the actions of corporations and individuals interdependent?

John Dougherty, Third Act Oregon Volunteer

To have a chance to save ourselves, we must abandon energy-using machines and instead employ the power inherent in our bodies and minds to live within the bounds of the local natural communities that sustain us.
