The SAVE Act has now passed the House, and the Senate will be voting soon.

Can you get your hands on your original birth certificate?

Do you have a current passport?

Does your birth certificate match your current name?

No? You (and millions of other people) could lose your right to vote.

• Understand the issue: The SAVE Act would require everyone to show, in person, proof of their citizenship — in the form of a passport or original birth certificate that matches their current last name — to register to vote, or even just to update their voter registration. It would mean the end of online and mail-in voter registration, and voter registration drives. This is a massive form of extreme national voter suppression.
• Recognize who’s affected: Anyone who does not have a current passport (which costs money to obtain), or their original birth certificate, including people who’ve changed their name for any reason, immigrants, transgender people, foster children, military personnel, tribal members, rural voters, disaster survivors, and anyone who has moved since their last registration.
• TODAY, call your senators: In California, that’s Alex Padilla (202) 224-3553 and Adam Schiff (202) 224-3841. Call today, call tomorrow, and keep calling until the vote – even the same people over and over. 
• Use this script for California senators: “Hello. My name is [your name] and my zip code is [your zip code]. As your constituent, I want you to join with all other Democratic senators in a unified coalition to vote NO on the SAVE Act (HR22), and I want you to publicly state your intention and determination to unify Democratic senators to vote NO on the SAVE Act to the press and on your social media platforms. Please let me know that you will do these things [leave phone number or email].”
• Please also call senators beyond California (find any senator) and say: “As a citizen of the United States, I’m urging you to join with all Democratic senators in a unified coalition to vote NO on the SAVE Act (HR22). I ask that you publicly state your intention and determination to unify Democratic senators to vote NO on the SAVE Act to the press and on your social media platforms. Please let me know that you will do these things [leave phone number or email].”
• Please especially call these Democratic and Independent senators who may still be on the fence. These are the most important, but if you have the time, DON’T STOP THERE. Call as many Democratic senators as you can, and then start in on the Republicans. So much is riding on this vote.

Tell your state lawmakers: Don’t Break the Solar Contract!

Background: The Newsom Administration has proposed to break two million solar contracts. California requires PG&E, Edison, and SDG&E to sign an “interconnection agreement” with solar customers. For those who signed up for solar before April 2023, the contract guarantees your “net metering” plan for twenty years, which is the minimum warranty for solar panels.

At the request of Governor Newsom, the CA Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is now proposing to:

• Break these solar contracts.
• Slash the credit you get for the solar energy you send back to the grid.
• Slap you with a Solar Tax
• Apply these changes to anyone who went solar before April 2023.

Climate Change Hurts Children Now

Climate change is a public health issue for our children here, but children around the world are suffering more immediate impacts. Children under five may bear as much as 88% of the global burden of disease from climate change, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics in Climate Change: The Impact on Children’s Health. Furthermore, “Many of the most problematic child health issues, including asthma, obesity, and mental and neurodevelopmental disorders, may benefit from climate action.” 

Call and write your House and Senate representatives: Save children, save USAID 

USAID provides lifesaving food and medicine to desperate children around the world. It represents a tiny fraction of the U.S. budget, but its impact is vast and makes the U.S. safer by demonstrating the good will of the American people. It’s also a program that helps American farmers, purchasing $2 billion worth of food from them every year.

The president has bypassed Congress and unilaterally stopped food and medical relief through USAID –and it’s killing children.

Use this form to call and write to your House and Senate representatives TODAY and tell them that you proudly support USAID. Urge them to immediately follow their role as a co-equal branch of government and use their Congressional oversight powers to restore USAID relief. 

Why: There is proposed legislation to change the Antiquities Act. The Antiquities Act enables the President to create National Monuments on our public lands. Public lands are some of our most precious places.Public lands often include sacred places to Indian Nations. They are valuable to our public for multiple uses for recreation, health, fun, and inspiration. (In California, most of the most recent national monuments created protect sacred places.) 

When: Write and submit your social media post by the end of day, Monday, February 10. This will go to a hearing for the first time on Tuesday, 2/11. The hearing will review to change the Antiquities Act, an important Act that allows a President to protect public lands.
