surrounded by folks still carrying their signs
for Peace, Diversity and Equality, and though
no one was listening, though there were no news trucks,
no microphones, no megaphones, and
no way
any politician would hear their voices or see their signs,
there they were, singing and showing up despite,
and this was the moment that made me believe
in the path—not just the grand marches toward freedom,
but also the thin trails marked with courage and creativity,
small moments I can follow like bread crumbs
till this country again feels like home.

The current CEO of AARP, Jo Ann Jenkins, is resigning at the end of this year and the Board will be choosing her successor. Let’s call for a new AARP leader who is ready to make climate action a priority on day one. And this is not just for future generations. Sea level rise caused by global warming is seriously threatening the health and retirement savings of millions of older Americans whose equity is tied up in homes that increasingly can’t be insured or sold. We have allies inside the organization who want AARP to take a strong stand on climate issues, but success requires support from large numbers of older Americans.
